N95 8GB Phone Memory & N-Gage

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

Hello fellow Nokia-ites.

I have an N95 8GB.  I love this phone and the features and functionality - but I have a few questions.

1. How can I free up some of the 'Phone Memory' (not 'Mass Memory')

I only have 83MB free, but there is nothing in any of the folders that I can see - and memory details say that I'm using quite a bit more than I can account for.  As I have seen it recommended to have at least 100MB free, if possible, I'd like to find out where the memory has gone. (yes, restarts don't free any up either)

2. Is there any way of keeping my N-Gage games when I update the phones firmware? (or even get a list of all of my registration codes - I have bought the lifetime registration for 26 games - but evey time I update the firmware, regardless of a phone back-up, I have to redownload all of the games. (they do 'auto-register' though)  And I had to do a factory reset some months back and all of the games went back to trial versions - I had to 'apply' to Nokia for my registration codes which took several weeks to get.)

Is there any way that a firmware upgrade wont 'delete' all of the games? (and can I get the reg. codes for my own use?)

Please help!

Cheers,

Rick

E90: barcode reader

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

The BarCode reader application in my E90 does not recognize 99% of the barcodes that I scan. And I mean real-life barecodes, printed on paper, like those in shops. The barcodes from the computer screen (which are perfect) are recognized faily ok, which means that the application works (sort of).

I would like to know if anybody else has the same problem, or any advice on how to use the application so I can get better results. My E90 has the latest firmware update installed and it is unlocked.

Thank you !

Accidently Discovered GPS Backdoor functionality.

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

I discovered a secret function obviously programmed in by Nokia's programmers and not meant for general public use.

Which brings up an interesting question, if i post this information how long before it gets deleted?.

-------

I Found a way to enable the GPS chipset to use it's max settings rather than standard settings which are throttled to less than half power, the GPS chipset is a lot more powerful than I first thought and i found this little backdoor completely by accident so here goes.

Run GPS Data.

Go stand outside/somewhere you get at least a 3 Sat lock, look at the Bars to indicate GPS status and now for the information the Nokia don't want you to know about, getting full power and full sensitivity out of the N95, i presume they did this so that people would upgrade to a future N Series which has "better" GPS locks but with this info you'll get the best GPS device ever!

Looking at the GPS data, all the bars, wait until 3 + locked on (TURN AGPS OFF FOR THIS) one more thing mine's a Nokia N95 8GB 20.0.0.16 but i presume this will work on N95-1 etc etc...

But PLEASE reply to let people know..

Go outside, wait for a LOCK watch them bars, now you'll see the LCD screen on and eventually the Keypad lights go off but the LCD will be on still good, now on the side look for the camera button, push in but do not CLICK (no clicky!!!) if done correctly the Keypad lights will come on, but only push in do not let go and do not click..

NOW while HOLDING the camera button watch the GPS data, after 8 - 10 seconds you'll notice ALL the bars go off and it will say "No Satellite Data Available"  (Satellite Status) as soon as that comes up LET GO of the camera button....

Welcome to the REAL N95 GPS this was throttled back for some reason, what you'll find is the GPS chipset goes into over drive and does many MANY more calculations to get a better lock, the result of this excellent find / discovery from me (sorry Nokia, someone had to find it) is that now you'll get 3x more of a signal lock...

Load up Nokia Maps or your Fav GPS software you'll see full signal (not just half way) but right to the max, something no mere mortal's seen before on an N95 full power, and i think if you hold the camera button down again it switches to another mode (still investigating)....

It will remain in full power GPS mode until you restart the N95.  it completely wastes the Nokia 6110now, it works in built up areas even works indoors no need for AGPS you just need a small signal lock and then you can enter into the back door for proper GPS functionality.

E51 - VYKE

Saturday, January 31st, 2009

I have installed Vyke on my E51 as it seemed to be the only reccommended prog. for VOIP on WIFI.  It does work but the call quality is very poor.  I've tried it on 3 different WIFI networks and I've run tests on all of them on the VOIP speed test site which tells me they all far exceed requirments for top quality calls.  Any suggestions and or alternatives. ?
